For extra convenience, we offer pre-filled picnic baskets with local products and seasonal fruit, so you only need to pick your spot. Whether it’s a quiet lunch for two or a family gathering, a picnic here is always special.

Playgrounds

At Starbase18, children never run out of places to play. On our property, you’ll find scattered play areas with fun and safe entertainment, while nearby villages such as Fernão Joanes and Guarda offer modern, well-maintained playgrounds free to use. Kids can also explore nature’s playground — from climbing rocks and splashing in small creeks to spotting local wildlife. Whether structured or unstructured, play is always close at hand, giving families plenty of options for fun and exploration. Starbase18 is a perfect place for children to stay active, creative, and connected with nature.

Swimming

At Starbase18, swimming is part of summer life. Whether you prefer a shallow plunge pool for kids, a refreshing dip in a mountain river, or a day at the lake, there are plenty of options nearby. The Barragem do Caldeirão is just minutes away, perfect for open-water swims. For shade and calm, choose one of the safe, child-friendly river beaches such as Valhelhas, Linhares da Beira, or Quinta da Taberna. Even in colder months, the indoor pool in Guarda is available. From wild swims to family fun, water is always within easy reach at Starbase18.

The Serra da Estrela region is home to more than 140 fascinating geosites, each telling the story of how glaciers, granite, and time shaped Portugal’s highest mountains. From striking granite formations and glacial valleys to the breathtaking Passadiços do Mondego walkway, these sites reveal the deep geological history of the region. Trails begin directly from Starbase18, with marked routes like Trail 9 at our back gate and many more available for download. Whether you hike independently or join a guided walk, exploring the geosites is both accessible and unforgettable, offering a true journey through the past.

Aldeias historicas de Portugal

Aldeias historicas de Portugal is a group of 12 historic villages located in central Portugal. The association aims to promote the Historic Villages of Portugal preserve the history as well as promote socioeconomic growth of the local region. Starbase18 is located in the center of the 12 villages and therefore can be your central base when visiting one or more of the historic villages.

Aldeias de montanha

The mountain villages or “Aldeias de Montanha” project works actively to promote the integrated development of the Mountain Villages Network of 41 villages as an unified brand of the touristic potential of the Serra da Estrela region and Beira Interior. The villages around Starbase18 are part of this network and that gives the recognition of collectiveness.
