Renewable energy solutions including solar and off grid innovations at Starbase18 B&B

Renewable energy

Starting from zero, we’ve begun building a renewable energy system to cover electricity and heating needs. Initial steps include solar collectors and a gasifier, to match the warmth demand, plus grid upgrades to handle future solar panels and batteries. Next: photovoltaic carport, heat storage, and exploring heat pumps.

Working our way to become fully off-grid

Renewable energy

At the outset, the property had no renewable energy at all, making us fully dependent on external power and fossil fuels. Our aim is to become self-reliant for electricity and heating, while ensuring that even during outages, essentials like pumps, refrigerators, and lighting keep running.

We’ve installed the first hot water solar collectors, eliminating the reliance on gas and improving efficiency during sunny months. A gasifier system has also been set up, providing heat for the house, apartments, and hot water, while being much cleaner and more efficient than the old diesel or wood systems.

To prepare for scaling up, we upgraded the local electrical grid and wiring so it can handle power from photovoltaic panels and battery storage in the future. This groundwork avoids major future disruptions when adding new components.

Plans moving forward include building a carport roofed with photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity directly on-site. Adding a home battery system will help store excess energy and keep vital systems running during grid outages. We’re also exploring heat batteries, like sand or granite, to store surplus heat, and using ground temperature for preheating water or cooling living spaces. Finally, we’ll investigate the feasibility of heat pumps to further cut energy use and boost efficiency.
