About Frank & Janneke

Starbase18 wouldn’t exist without its founders: Janneke and Frank. Each brings a distinct background, personality and focus, but they share the same drive to build a place where sustainability, creativity and modern comfort meet.

Janneke holds a Master of Science in Toxicology from Wageningen University, with a background in environmental science and biological soil treatment. A lifelong advocate for a healthy lifestyle, she ran many marathons and is mother of three kids. At Starbase18, she leads the projects that regenerate soil, produce healthy food, and create green, living systems that guests can experience and learn from.

Frank started his career in software development, running his own software company before switching to more purposeful work in sustainable energy and education. His passion for maker education, project-based learning and living labs led him to develop new educational models that bridge digital and analog worlds. At Starbase18, Frank focuses on technical systems, prototyping, and designing educational concepts to engage guests, locals and entrepreneurs alike. He loves complex problems, system thinking and, admittedly, new tools and gadgets.

They complement each other perfectly: Frank dreams up concepts and builds prototypes; Janneke keeps the projects concrete, practical and rooted in everyday life. While Frank might be wiring a new sensor network or planning the next workshop, Janneke is busy turning garden produce into healthy meals for the family and guests.

At its heart, Starbase18 reflects who they are: curious, hands-on, forward-thinking, and deeply connected to the land and community around them.
