Geosites
The Estrela region presents a significant diversity of granite landforms at different scales, including large forms such as inselbergs, medium-scale forms such as zoomorphic forms resembling animals, anthropomorphic forms resembling humans, and detailed forms such as sinks and taffoni. Of significant cultural and scientific value, granite landforms are especially important because they allow us to assess granite erosion rates and, therefore, landscape dynamics. They also reveal a complex geomorphological evolution controlled by the interaction of deep erosion, petrography, and climate structure and evolution.

A geosite is a specific location of notable geological interest, featuring rocks, landforms, fossils or mineral structures, often with cultural or educational value. They’re recognized for scientific, aesthetic or heritage importance. Within UNESCO Global Geoparks, geosites serve as “living laboratories,” aiding sustainable tourism, public education, conservation, and community development
